We take on a small number of projects each year and go deep into each one. The decisions we make now are for how the building will feel in forty years, not how it photographs next month.

Founder
Shahbaz spent several years in Dubai working on residential and fit-out projects before founding Matte 7. His background is in documentation, site coordination and computational design. He started the studio on the conviction that good architecture takes time to get right, and that most firms move too fast to do it.
Co-Founder
Abubakar worked for four years in Riyadh across architecture, interiors and landscape before joining the studio. That range shows up in how he approaches a brief. He is comfortable moving between scales and building types, and he thinks good work comes from doing the same things more carefully, project by project.

Process
I
Listen
We start with the site, the brief, and long conversations with the people who will use the building.
II
Sketch
Hand drawings, physical models, material samples. We work things out on paper before they go anywhere else.
III
Refine
Full documentation, coordinated with structural engineers, landscape consultants and contractors. Every joint is drawn.
IV
Build
We stay on site through to completion. When problems come up, we are there to solve them.
